The Popemobile

Hi VeloViets,

I was in the UK last week and had a chance to see Pope Benedict riding in his "popemobile". Although not bike related, I thought you folks might be intested in checking out the Pope's ride when he tours the street.

The Popemobile is a modified Mercedes Benz stationwagon, with a raised platform "shell" surrounded by bullet-proof glass windows.

The entire car was surrounded by security. There was a metal railing keeping the people about 10 feet away from the Pope's car. There must have been thousands of people there in London to see the Pope.

The side window actually lowers. Here you can see a baby is raised up to the Pope for a blessing. It was quite an experience being there.

The Tour of Britain Bike Race was also going on last week, but I did not get a chance to see any of the stages. The city was full of bikers, most seemed to be either on a fixed gear or a portable folding bikes. Here is a picture me in front of Buckingham Palace.

I am still adjusting to the time zone, and have not been riding for about 2 weeks now, so will be drafting everyone that will let me this coming Sunday. Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Out,
Phong

  3. I would say the Pope did some how transfer a tiny bit of his enormous energy to you during the event... you've carried that with you home and attacked us badly on the riverbed!

    Ride On...
