The Rookie Bike Project - 9/23 Status

Over 6 months ago, a Rookie had a dream. What if an ultimate bike could be built. One that would be fast and light enough such that a worthy challenge can be made to the Fast Riders. Thus the search began...

After many months of search, the answer came from... Singapore...

Packaged in a small wheel box, the Ducati Corse arrived...

Opening the package, the frame gleamed brightly in the VeloViet's color...

A month later, stem, seatpost, and handlebar arrived. Of course, it also had to have a touch of VV red...

After another month of search, a pair of wheels was snatched off of eBay...

Pockets now much lighter, the search is at a stand still, and the Ducati waits patiently for its Campy mate. The Rookie's dream still burns brightly, vision vividly etched in his mind. Watch out Fast Riders, Mr. Ducati is coming your way in 2010!

  1. Rookie - stop teasing us already. When are you going to debut this beauty. I'm getting excited. You certainly build up anticipation. Let it out, man.

  2. Nice bike, I wanted one of this before as I was a Ducatista. Before my love for cycling, I had a love for motorcycle, and still do. I started with a Kawasaki Ninja 600R and slowly moved up to a ZX7, than a R1, and finally a Ducati 996. That Ducati was my love and joy. Now like my motorcycle, I fell in love with cycling and started from a Scattanted. Went through 2 Trek, Specialized, Origin 8, 2 Orbea, Cannondale, SAB, Airborne, 2 Giant,Cervelo, and finally arrive at my dream bike. A Pinarello Prince that I just pick up a couple of weeks ago. I think this bike will good for now.
Enjoy your build Phong. I always think its more special to build your dream bike with components that you pick out personally rather than a complete bike. That way you get to enjoy each step of the build. Hope to see it soon.
P.S. Cosmetically, I think the stem should be flip so it is almost parallel to the Top Tube. That's just my opinion. But don't worry too much about, do what ever makes it fit right for you. It's not about the look, it's the motor that make you fast.

  5. Come on Phong, need to get the bike up and running by the end of the year. Next year will be a new bike.
Where did you get those 3T Ergonova & stem? Those are nice and the handlebar is a compact too. I had those on my Cervelo but it was not wide enough (40 cm) and the stem was too short (90 mm). You will enjoy those handlebar and stem combo. Matches the bike color too.

  6. Tuan, you went through a lot of bikes. That's 13 bikes all together!

The Ducati will be my 3rd bike. No more bikes for me for the next 10 years. Dashaan, please keep some red color on next year's bike kit ;-)

The 3T components were purchased on-line from the UK, at the lowest price that I could find. The handlebar is 42cm and stem is 100mm.

I am trying to recreate similar bike position as my old bike, but the new frame is 55cm whereas the old frame is 57cm. That's why the stem is flip up to bring the handlebar height similar as the old height due to a shorter head tube. As I adapt to the bike, I might flip the stem.

I have gone over budget, low on bike funds, but also don't want to buy just any components, so debut may be next year. I am keeping my eyes on eBay and Weight Weenies though in hope that I can debut the Ducati in my Rookie year. Let me know of any good Campy deals you see. Thanks!

  7. Overall, a nice looking rig! You better flip that stem or else its gonna poke in you in the eye when in the drops.

  8. Man, tough crowd. When I get the bike finish, let's see how flexible my back is, then I might flip the stem.
