8/14 Malibu Preparation Ride

So... how do you break in a Newbie... you take them on a 60-65 miles, 3500-4200 feet climb ride of course! Hey we got high standards ;-)

Today's ride was broadcasted as the preparation ride for the Malibu Epic Ride next week. On paper, it sure looked like it was HARDER than the Malibu ride itself! Interesting was that our route planner was conveniently not available to do this hard ride with us!

For some reason or another, the hard route attracted Newbies! They came out in droves today! Here are some photos at MSP:

Seems like the A2 team dominated this route. Luke, Steve, and Arnel was there representing the A1 team but they were dwarfed by all the A2 muscle power that showed up for this hard ride.

I have to say the Newbies did pretty darn good. You can tell that they are new to pack riding, but seems like they do have cycling experience. There was a lady guest rider who held her own riding in the pack of strong guys too. Great job!

As for the rest of the ride? Let's say that everyone was trash talking our route planner! Man this route was hard! I was in the second group and we got lost! Took an extra 4 or 5 miles past the Crown Valley turn and ended up somewhere deep in Dana Point.

We turn around and found Crown Valley. Turns out on this street had a different name if you turn right. I think we were pushing hard around here somewhere trying to catch the front pack and must have missed the sign.

Found the front pack on Crown Valley, but lost the pack I was with. The guys went on to Bluebird while I went with Ted, Mark, and Chanh to see if we can catch up with the A2 somewhere on PCH.

We did catch up with a bunch of folks. I ended up escorting 3 or 4 of the guests back to MSP. They were beat but excited to finished. There was one rider who could not and Billy was nice enough to get his truck to bring the rider back to MSP.

Hard ride, but a good preparation for Malibu. Come on out to Malibu folks. I am going to focus on riding this hard route next week and will not be able to recap. See you then!

Out,
Phong
